Exhibitions, museums, art in general and countless monuments, that’s all about the capitals, and London is one of them…even more, one of the top ones. So there’s another celebration, to remember bicentenary of Charles Dickens’s birth in February 7th 1812, planning a huge exhibition with author’s work, its themes and how he illuminated and was inspired by London. So from December until May, you are more than welcome to walk through 19 century with the author…
The show is all about to show the visitors how and where to follow in Dickens’s footsteps as he walked through the nineteenth-century city, building in his mind the settings, plots and characters of his novels. In his works through this period he showed it all , the major social problems and themes, such as childhood mortality, prostitution, wealth and poverty. The exhibition will show the industrial age which come along, including steam boats, railways, the electric telegraph and the Penny Post. You will see Dickens’s writing desk and chair, and manuscript pages describing the East End opium den featured in his last, unfinished novel, “The Mystery of Edwind Drood”.
The Dickens’s show will conclude with a film , William Raban’s “ Housless Shadow”, which goes hand by hand with the dark of London, how it described Dickens 150 years ago.
London was Dickens’ ‘magic lantern’ providing the setting and inspiration for some of his greatest works, so obviously the show is held in the beautiful capital, all exploring his love and hate and relationship with the city. There were some important issues, he threw under the spotlight, that no one that time could.
Enjoy London 2012
